Ocean Commons, Law of the Sea & Marine Resource Governance
"Mapping sovereign rights and international duties across the global maritime domain."
Research focus on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), maritime boundary delimitation, marine resource management, and the implementation of international legal frameworks in Vietnam's maritime zones. Includes deep-seabed mineral resources, the common heritage of mankind (the Area), and the BBNJ Agreement on marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction.
International Environmental, Climate & Transboundary Resource Governance
"Structuring legal frameworks for emissions trading, global climate obligations, and transboundary resource governance."
Examines the legal mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, national carbon market designs, environmental liability in international law, marine plastic waste control, and international cooperation in sustainable development of the Mekong River under the 1995 Agreement.
ASEAN/EU Regional Legal Orders & Comparative Integration
"Comparing and connecting regional integration models to inform global legal order."
Studies the legal integration mechanisms of ASEAN and the EU, including rule of law, regional trade and investment governance, legal community building, and comparative dispute settlement structures. Particular focus on next-generation free trade agreements (FTAs) involving ASEAN, EU, and Vietnam.
International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights & Human Protection
"Protecting human dignity and rights in armed conflict and in peacetime."
Examines instruments and mechanisms for human protection under international law, including international humanitarian law (IHL), international human rights law (IHRL), and refugee law. Focuses on the interplay between IHL and IHRL in armed conflict, state responsibility for human rights violations, and the role of the ICRC.
Legal Infrastructure: Treaty Law, Dispute Settlement & Implementation
"Analysing the foundational architecture of the international legal system — treaties, courts, and enforcement mechanisms."
Studies the foundational structure of international law: treaty law (Vienna Convention 1969), treaty interpretation and application, international dispute settlement (ITLOS, ICJ, UNCLOS Annex VII/VIII arbitration), and state responsibility. Special focus on the enforceability and effectiveness of international rulings and decisions vis-à-vis developing states.
